Beyond Paper: Why Paint Swatches Are the Ultimate Art Week Place Cards

Miami Art Week and Art Basel Miami are known for pushing boundaries, so when a client approached me with the theme “The Art of the Finish” for their Art Week Luncheon, I knew we had to do something more inspired than traditional cardstock.

The request? Calligraphy on paint color swatches for their luncheon. Of course I could not say no!

Before we get into the fun details of these paint-swatch place cards from Miami Art Week, let me properly introduce myself. Hi! I’m Sanique, a Miami-based calligrapher and engraver and the founder of Sanique & Co. I specialize in helping private clients and brands—from well-established companies to emerging businesses—elevate their guest and client experiences through calligraphy, engraving, and other personalized event details. If you’re ready to create memorable, wow-worthy moments for your clients and guests, let’s get connected.

The Beauty of Unconventional Surfaces

As a calligrapher, I live for a "surface challenge." Whether it’s leather, glass, or in this case, paint chips, there is something so satisfying about seeing elegant calligraphy meeting unique surfaces.

Using paint swatches as place cards isn't just a "cheap hack"—it’s a design statement. Here is why it worked so well for this Miami event:

The VIP Design Factor: Guests of the luncheon were VIP designer clients who truly appreciated the playful use of one of their staple design tools.

The Event Sponsors: Sponsors for the event included Benjamin Moore, Kohler, and Luxe Interiors + Design Magazine.

The Color Story: The client provided a palette of 12 colors to be used for the place cards. The floral arrangements and the rest of the event decor were also artfully selected to ensure cohesiveness.

Elevating the Guest Experience

At a seated luncheon, the place card is often the first thing a guest touches. By choosing something tactile and unexpected like a paint swatch, you’re telling the guest: “This isn’t just lunch; this is an experience.” There’s absolutely no doubt guests were delighted when they found their seats. It’s a simple, cost-effective idea, but when finished with professional calligraphy, it feels incredibly high-end.

Thinking Outside the Box for Your Next Event

If you are planning a corporate luncheon, a wedding, or a brand activation, don't feel limited to paper. I’ve worked on everything from sea shells to mirrors and even lasagna sheets, and now, paint chips! If you can dream it (and if my ink will stick to it), I can write on it.

Ready to get creative with your tablescape? Miami Art Week proves that the best ideas are often the most colorful ones. If you have a wild idea for your next event, let’s make it happen!
